Cy Twombly

Cy Twombly. Installation View. 1951-1991. Glenstone Museum, 2023.

Although most known for his paintings, Cy Twombly also developed a singular body of sculpture over the course of his career. Composed of everyday materials such as wood, metal, and found objects—to which he applied a delicate and unifying layer of white paint—the resulting group of works appear not as a series but, individually, as a metamorphosis of material.

Selected in collaboration with the artist before his death, this group of five sculptures including “Untitled, Lexington,” 1951; “Cycnus,” Rome, 1978; “Anabasis, Bassano in Teverina,” 1980; “Thicket, Formia-Roma,” 1981; and “Thicket, Gaeta,” 1991; together represent the elegant yet idiosyncratic breadth of Twombly’s sculptural practice.
